Porrima now accepts Bitcoin: What does this mean?
Bitcoin is everywhere. Its recent spike in value has caused an increased interest in cryptocurrency. Here at Porrima, we are constantly evolving and advancing. We like our company to feel inclusive and as an IT and Telecoms company, first and foremost, it is our responsibility to keep up with the times – which is why we now accept Bitcoin as a form of payment for our services and products.
A cryptocurrency is virtual or digital money that takes the form of tokens or ‘coins’ and while some cryptocurrencies have ventured into the physical world with credit cards, the majority remain entirely intangible. Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency to successfully record transactions on a secure, decentralised blockchain-based network. The now widespread cryptocurrency was launched in early 2009 by its pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. And now it’s the largest cryptocurrency measured by market capitalisation and the amount of data stored on its blockchain. Bitcoin is without a central bank or single administrator, meaning that it can be sent from user to user on the peer-to-peer Bitcoin secured network. Transactions are therefore verified by network nodes through cryptography and are recorded in a public distributed ledger called a ‘blockchain’.
Porrima is no different; we give our customers our Bitcoin address and they simply send the cryptocurrency to us. And, on the day that they plan to send it over, we will let them know exactly how much they need to pay – as the Bitcoin value fluctuates day by day. In regards to exchange, we are completely open and upfront with our customers. After it is accepted by us it is converted into pounds and registered appropriately on our customer’s account. Therefore, there are no issues encountered when it comes to tax payments to HMRC and we can continue to be transparent and open in our financial dealings.
Daniel Shapiro, the CEO and founder of Porrima said: “We were the first company to offer Proposal Management Systems to the Telecoms and IT industry over a decade ago back in 2008. We regard ourselves as being ahead of the curve, and, in that same vein, we are now also one of the first companies to accept Bitcoin. Here at Porrima, we love progressing, evolving and learning about the tech industry. Providing a pioneering service to our customers is at the heart of everything we do.”
Research produced by the University of Cambridge has estimated that there are between 2.9 to 5.8 million unique users using a cryptocurrency wallet, most of them using Bitcoin. To give our customers freedom of choice, in addition to accepting Bitcoin, we also accept Ethereum. This was the first Bitcoin alternative and is a decentralised software platform that enables Smart Contracts and Decentralised Applications to be built and run without any downtime, fraud, control, or interference from a third party (much like Bitcoin). The main goal behind Ethereum is to create a decentralised suite of financial products that anyone in the world can have free access to, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or faith. This aspect makes the Ethereum option more compelling than Bitcoin, as those without state infrastructure can get access to bank accounts, loans and a variety of other financial products.
Shapiro says: “This is something we care deeply about, giving everyone freedom to pay how they would like. And because Bitcoin is anonymised, our customers will be fully protected as their cryptocurrencies move through our network.”
